Coronavirus, a virus which had its first outbreak in Wuhan, China has spread all over the world leading the World Health Organization to declare it as a pandemic. With the cases rising and thousands of people dying, understandably people are concerned about catching it. Here are a few measures that can be taken to protect yourself from COVID-19.
1. Practice good hygiene
This is easy and can be easily done through washing your hands. Good hand hygiene helps prevent the transmission of a virus from one person to another. Don’t only watch your hands when it’s visibly dirty but more often as bacteria and viruses are microscopic and can be present even if your hands look clean. In order to ensure you’re killing all the bacteria and viruses, make sure to watch your hands for at least 20 seconds. Hand washing should be done before eating, after coming back home, sneezing or coughing and after utilizing the washroom. Wash both hands thoroughly with
handsanitizer or soap and water for a minimum of 20 seconds and rinse afterwards.
2. Cough or sneeze into your elbow
Covering a sneeze or cough with your hands is not a good idea as you can potentially transfer those bacteria or viruses onto your hand which can later be spread by touching other surfaces you touch or through shaking hands with someone. Instead of using your hands, try using a tissue or your elbow.
Dispose of the tissue once you’re done using it.
3.Stay home if you are sick
As hard as it may be due to being in school or working, avoid being in social spaces if you aren’t feeling well. Staying home and working on your recovery is the best method to avoid infecting others. You can also wear a
face mask to avoid infecting others. Our

4. Find alternative ways to greet people
Due to COVID-19 being a respiratory ailment, it is spread by droplets expelled from the respiratory system by a sneeze or cough. Rather than shaking hands, you can try air high fives, a wave or a nod. Explaining why you are not shaking one’s hand could also be good idea to avoid appearing rude. In the case that you absolutely have, make sure to wash your hands afterwards.
5. Keep your hands off your face
As previously mentioned above, it’s possible for droplets to be transferred via hand-to-hand contact. In this case, it’s a good idea to keep your hands off your face. If these droplets on your hands made their way to your face it would be able to transfer into your body. Making these small adjustments will contribute towards protecting you not only from coronavirus but from other illnesses as well.
